Photos of psychiatric hospitals

psychiatric.jpg

These photos of French psychiatric doctors and patients (including the photo at left, taken in the 4th arrondissement) were taken by Jean-Philippe Charbonnier in 1954. We unfortunately missed the recent exhibition of this series Le Bleu Duciel, but at least some of the photos are online now. There are some that are weirdly clinical, and others that are strikingly personal; some were deemed too provocative to publish in 1954. In 2006, Galerie Agathe Gaillard published a booklet of Charbonnier's hospital photos, from which these are drawn.

Thanks to Boing Boing for the tip.

To Bigdget,
Hi,
Many thanks to have noticed the work of Jean-Philippe Charbonnier.
I am the author of his biography on the website Luminous-lint.com, I was his assistant and his friend and knew him quiet well . If you would like some information about this extraordinary man and his fabulous photographic works, not enough known to my opinion, contact me. I stay in Paris.

Best Regards,
Gery Cichowlas
