Gallery Hopping at Thaddeaus Ropack, Karsten Greve, and Chez Valentin

Gallery Hopping at Thaddeaus Ropac, Karsten Greve, and Chez Valentin
Saturday night was a big gallery opening night in the Marais and Parisist made the proverbial rounds.
First there was the Tom Sachs Islandia show at Galerie Thaddeaus Ropac. With his usual themes of consumerism, corporate identity and the advance of technology, the show had mostly sculptures and large paintings. We were amused by the 10 ft. replica of a Hooters restaurant menu and liked the ghetto blaster sculpture that had a sign on top that said “Negro Music”.
Next door at Galerie Karsten Greve were the much more subdued and quiet drawings of Hanns Schimansky. The gouache drawings of black and white with geometric inserts of bright colors were well drawn but failed to spark any reaction or emotion.
At Galerie Chez Valentin was a conceptual show of two British artists Rupert Norfolk and George Henry Longly. The “I Beams” by Rupert Norfolk were a series of four repainted I beams that looked like beautiful porcelain sculptures. The George Henry Longly “Lighting Proposal 1” is an installation of white fluorescent bulbs to add more light to the gallery. Although they overly achieved this and our eyes had to adjust to the glaring white light, we didn’t get the artistic merit.
Parisist had wangled an invitation to the A- list after party of the Tom Sachs show and we had more fun standing at the entrance watching rich Americans in furs getting out of chauffer driven silver Mercedes than at the actual party. We spotted Andre Putman walking at a snails pace because of the pencil thin tweed skirt she was wearing with high-heeled mules. Also spotted was Keanu Reeves.

Heh, it's hard to tell from what you wrote if Parisist was on the "A"-list or the "A-" list. :) I can certainly see Keanu Reeves being on the latter.

Like it or not, Reeves is on the AList. Why on earth do people seem to have a problem with him? He minds his own business and does his thing.
