Borat Hits Paris: Are You Excited? [en]

boratparis.jpg

Having patiently waited for Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan to open here, all the while being teased by posters everywhere, Parisist is only too excited to be proud ticket holders to tonight's Avant-Prémiere at select movie theaters. If you've been living under a rock, the movie doesn't open in France until tomorrow and will easily be the funniest film you will see this (or next) year.

That is, if you think Borat is funny.

Kazakhstan doesn't think so.

Neither do two frat boys from a South Carolina university. They're suing Borat because they were drunkenly portrayed as making sexist and racist comments. According to the Yahoo article,

The young men "engaged in behavior that they otherwise would not have engaged in," the lawsuit says.

Riiiiight.

Metro France reports that Mahir Çağrı [fr], the friendly Turk who became an Internet celebrity in 1999 with his personal site ikissyou.org, is accusing Sacha Baron Cohen of copying him. However, some Internet sleuthers date the earliest mention of the Borat character to 1994.

In any case, Parisist is looking forward to the wild and wacky antics of Borat. Does Paris feel the same way?

Plus, Sacha Baron Cohen is kinda hot.

Also, the Romanian village that stands in for Borat's hometown is extremely upset and planning to sue. They didn't know they were being made fun of; they thought it would be a documentary about their crushing poverty.
