Google, Blogs and Riots

google.jpg
What do the Riots, Paris and Google have in common ? One could think not much, but there is a link called Nicolas Sarkozy, France's interior minister.

Nicolas Sarkozy has long used the web to promote its own political group, the UMP. First one to use spams, first one to use google ad words. But to the light of the current riots in France, the google ads take a whole new signification:

Try "Voitures brûlées²" (Burned cars), "Racaille" (slang for youngsters from the suburbs) or "emeutes" (riots) in google and you will be confronted with a single ad: "Riots in the Suburbs: Help Nicolas Sarkozy Fight Crime" followed by a link to Sarkozy's political group.

The aeiou weblog started a count of keywords purchased by Sarkozy's team: amongst them, communism, socialist, democracy, torskysm and ... crime.

In the meantime, 3 youngsters have been arrested today for promoting the riots on their weblogs and asking to "attack police stations". They face up to 5 years in jail.
